Boone Construction, Inc - made an new adventure during the Summer of 2018 “Lone Cabbage Oyster Restoration” the job was to place limerock bolders into the Gulf of Mexico to restore Long Cabbage Oyster Reef for the University of Florida. The job started in May 2018 and was complete by September 15, 2018. The job was done out of the town of Suwannee in Dixie County,Florida. The project called for certain material to be used and had to be approved by UF and found within a certain area. The material was limestone boulders that had to be dug up and broken into sizes that was approved for this project. After processing and approval of material it then had to be hauled and dumped for the loading process to begin in the town of Suwannee. The barge awaited to be loaded and containers in place for boulders to be placed into. After loading was complete the barge then were assisted to go up the river in way of a push boat. The push boats then assisted the barges hauling containers of the boulder sizes between 10”- 36” to another barge with a long reach excavator to unload and place material in their precise location on the reef. This project had several surveys that was completed per section to keep this project on task. The restoration of the Long Cabbage Reef was approximately 3 miles long that heads East towards Cedar Key from the town of Suwannee. The reef restoration will be helping with the growth population of oysters and assist with the coast resilience in the face of climate change and rises of sea level.
